Hello!

Here it’s hot, in Italy as well as in other Countries, a lot of people are on vacation, but only now – I’m sorry for that – I found the time to fix the known issues of DEFT 8.1.

DEFT 8.2 is the latest release of DEFT 8. What has been fixed?

Fixed a bug that in some conditions prevented the system to be installed;
Fixed the bug of DNS on /etc/resolv.conf;
Fixed the bug of the apt-get sources.list;
Improved device recognition in live-mode;
Updated all packages to the latest Ubuntu release available for Quantal.

The next release, DEFT 10, celebrating the first decade of the DEFT project, will be presented during the fourth edition of DEFTCON.

DEFT Zero (beta) ready for download

In the last few months we have a little AWOL. We didn’t meet the DEFT ZERO deadlines and we apologize for that.

What’s DEFT ZERO? This new mini DEFT distro is fully optimized for the acquisition and hashing of mass storage devices, in just 400 MB! Due DEFT Zero’s light weight and the fact that it can be loaded entirely into RAM at computer boot, it allows you virtually to turn any computer (even a really obsolete one) into a storage media cloner device.

The project is at an advanced  stage of development: in other words DEFT Zero is almost ready! Now, therefore, we decided to release the final public BETA of DEFT Zero. Why is it still in beta? Because it currently has a bug (we’re about to solve it) on cloning of mass storage hard disc with a Linux LVM. Despite the alteration does not change time references or files status, we strongly recommend to not use deft zero to acquire this kind of device.

Enjoy DEFT Zero!

It has been a long time since we last published a post on this website. Many asked us if the project is still actively developed or not…  The answer is YES absolutely! yes, we are back!
Please accept my personal apologies for the long silence: due really important professional commitments I could devote less and less time to the project. The same thing had occurred to the other team members.
Allow me to give you a few tips about the upcoming events

DEFTCON 2017
Save this date: on April 7, 2017 in Bologna, we will hold the DEFTCON 2017, the DEFT project’s official conference devoted to discuss about Digital Forensics, Incident Response and Open Source Intelligence’s topics.
we will post more information on the exact location, program and speakers really soon.

DEFT X
The ramping evolution of the digital forensics’ issues (SSD disks, increasing use of full-disk encryption, more and more armoured smartphones and anti indirect forensics techniques) prompted us to increase the effort on the develop of a more advanced forensic analyst’s forensic workstation.

The of the DEFT team member’s experiences and expertise will be merged in DEFT X, an x86 architectures installable customised operative system that will allow you able to turn any computer into a forensic analysis workstation devoted to acquire and analyse any type of computer data.

DEFT Zero
The DEFT Zero “Released Candide” allowed us to field test the distro on an extensive range of users who found and notified us several minor bugs we already fix.
The stable release of DEFT Zero is expected by the end of September 2016.

Please follow us on our Facebook fanpage or Twitter.

New website and project roadmap

Ciao!

As you may have noticed, the DEFT website has changed its look and contents. Many updates are coming forth, so we decided to restyle the website to better explain what we are doing for you.

First of all, as of 2012 DEFT is no longer a project managed by a single person but turned into a non-profit Association. The reason for this decision is that we wish to take part in European calls for tenders and receive donations, all of which will be devoted to new projects and to support a group of developers with the task of keeping and maintaining the project alive. You will find the Statute of the Association in the “About -> DEFT Association” menu.

You may have also noticed that the website is no longer English only. This is a favour we made to our Italian friends and followers: we wish to ensure that they can all stay up to date with our progress – even those who do not fully understand English.

Here follows the forthcoming milestones concerning the new versions of DEFT 8, Virtual Appliance and User Manual.

  • DEFT Linux 8.1 with relevant news for Mobile Forensics – November 2013
  • DEFT 8 VMware Virtual Appliance – late November 2013
  • Roadmap of projects supported by donations – December 2013
  • DEFT 8 User Manual – February 2014
  • Third Italian National Conference DEFTCON 2014  – Polytechnic of Milano, April 11, 2014

You’ll find a huge button to the right, it’s for donations, you cannot miss it! For 8 years we did our best to let you enjoy one of the best Forensic Tools around, it’s hight time to get some support to give you even more!

Thanks and see you soon.
